Risk is the effect of uncertainty on an expected result & the concept of risk-based thinking has always been implicit in ISO 9001 & ISO 14001. The 2015 editions of ISO 9001 & 14001 & ISO 45001:2018 makes risk-based thinking more explicit and incorporates it in requirements for the establishment, implementation, maintenance and continual improvement of the QMS, EMS & OH&SMS.
Unlike the old standards, the new ISO 9001 & 14001 standards expect you to determine “risks & opportunities”.
So what does this mean and what do the new standards expect you to do?
It expects you to start by considering risk qualitatively
(and, depending on the organisation’s context, quantitatively).
Therefore, before you take any business decision, always ask yourself: "What is the Risk".
